According to the Federal Statistical Office Destatis, the German public sector's national debt decreased by €16 billion in 2023, compared to a surge of €33 billion in 2022.

The ratio of debt to the nominal Gross Domestic Product, which was 77.4% at the end of 2022, has also experienced a slight decrease.
